LIME PAINTING, PLASTERS & SPECIALTY FINISHES GALLERY

Want a custom, artisanal vibe for your home?  Take a look!

For lime painting, limewash, custom plasters and other specialty finishes, you’ve come to the right place!

There’s nothing like a gorgeous, hand-applied lime painting or plaster finish to elevate the look of your home.   The softness of a lime wash finish, the authentic feel of a lime plaster that would be right at home in a villa on the Mediterranean. . .   These finishes are worlds apart from your standard painted sheetrock!

The process of getting either a limewash painting estimate or lime plaster estimate is unique, since we’re talking about custom, hand-done finishes.  We’ve written some blog posts about what the process looks like, including what to consider when choosing the right finish, and why we will make you a custom sample.  And our post about lime paints and plasters overall is an in-depth look at the differences among the types of finishes.

We never use stock photos! Rest assured you’re seeing actual projects of ours.

A few design notes:

The term “specialty finishes” is a bit of a catch-all phrase. You’ll see a wide variety of custom decorative finishes here. Custom finishes include plasters for everything from a range hood to a whole house interior, hand-brushed lime painting that brings a hand-crafted authenticity to a space, and limewash finishes that soften to look of brick of stone on an exterior.  And of course the occasional custom finish for a bit of “wow factor”, like alternating black and gold-leaf stripes in a powder bath!

Most of these finishes have been around for centuries, if not millennia.  Some version of lime painting or lime plaster can be found on every continent except Antarctica, everywhere from Teotihuacan in Mexico, to the pyramids in Egypt, to Roman structures such as the Coloseum and the Pantheon.  Vasari has a nice little overview of the history of lime plaster.

More recently, all those gorgeous Italian frescoes, such Michelangelo’s work in the Sistine Chapel, are done upon lime plaster, which accounts for their longevity.  (Although if you don’t get the chemistry right, the effects can be disastrous, as Leonardo da Vinci discovered with his “Last Supper” in Milan.)

Specialty finishes can be so subtle that it takes a discerning eye to notice them, or so bold that they are meant to contribute to the overall design of your space, more than just a paint color on your walls would do.  And because they’re applied by hand, expect to see subtle variations in color, sheen or application on your walls.  These nuances are part of the appeal of a hand-done specialty finish, and should be embraced as part of the overall aesthetic.
