Your Interior Limewash Painting Estimate – And Why this Favorite Finish is Different from Regular Paint

If you want a lovely, hand-done limewash in your own home, it's important to know what to expect from start to finish, beginning with the estimate!

Getting your interior limewash painting estimate is just Step One of a customized process that will give your home that lovely, authentic limewash finish you’re looking for.  But getting a lime painting estimate is more than just “getting the numbers”.  Because lime painting in all its forms is a hand-done, custom finish, you need to have a detailed conversation with your limewash painters about what you want the finish to look like, and get a custom sample made for you to approve.  Let’s look at what the lime wash painting estimate process looks like with Paper Moon Painting.

Terms you’ll see on your limewash painting estimate

Some terminology first.  There is so much chatter about anything with the word “lime” in it that we wrote a whole blog post about it, showing how these finishes differ, and how they’re applied.  Let’s clarify some of the terms you’ll need to know.

Limewash vs. Lime Wash vs. Lime Painting

Yours will be an interior limewash painting estimate, not an estimate for an exterior limewash, or for lime plaster (unless you want that as an option – more on that later).  This is a pretty important distinction!

The confusing thing is, the term “limewash” used to refer mostly to exterior finishes, where a limewash (basically a diluted lime paint) was applied as a thinned-down “wash” onto brick or sometimes to stone to soften the color and look of the home.  The exterior limewash is translucent, not a solid opaque color, and gets applied with varying degrees of thinness, so you can see some of the underlying brick color showing through.  Romabio has some great examples, and was one of the first to market, showing what this beautiful, European-style finish could do to American home exteriors.

But you’re looking for a limewash on your interior space.  So on your interior limewash painting estimate that we send you, you may see terms like “limewash” (all one word), “lime wash”, and “lime painting”, but they all mean basically the same thing.  The term “limewash” is no longer limited to just exteriors, and no longer refers only to a translucent or see-through finish (although that can be done on interior walls if that’s the look you want – more on that farther down).  We may use one of the variations in terminology, such as “lime wash painting estimate” or “lime painting estimate”, but we’re still talking about the same type of interior finish!

Lime Painting vs. Lime Plaster  –  Two Different Options

Perhaps you have an inspiration photo from Instagram or Pinterest, and it shows a “lime” finish of some sort, but the caption doesn’t specify what exactly.  The subtle movement of a lime-based finish is seen in both lime paint and lime plaster finishes, and even a trained professional can’t always tell the difference in a photo.  And both lime painting and lime plaster finishes are so popular in interior design trends such as modern Tuscan or wabisabi, odds are you’ll see plenty of photos that could be done in either limewash or plaster.

The top bathroom photo is done in a lime plaster, and the one beneath it in a lime paint or limewash finish.  Tough to tell, right?
.
At first glance, or seen from across the room, the two look incredibly similar.  The main difference between the two will be in the feel of the finish, when touched and seen up close.
.
For a lime painting finish, you’ll see the brushstrokes.  This is intentional.  It is part of the charm of a hand-applied finish on your walls, a technique that has been around for centuries.  The effect is subtle and almost velvety in appearance.

But for a lime plaster finish, the plaster is troweled on with a stainless steel blade.  The plaster can be very finely-textured or more coarse-grained, depending on the plaster used and the look you want.  Up close, you can see the tiny particles of aggregate in the finish, even if the plaster feels smooth to the touch.  And you’ll see what may look like brush strokes, but they’re actually the application marks from when the plaster was troweled on.

If you’ve asked us for a lime painting estimate but then show us an inspiration photo that might actually be done in lime plaster, we’ll have a conversation to determine exactly what you want for your home.  And if both limewash painting and lime plaster appeal to you, we can send an estimate for both!  The process for getting a lime plaster estimate is nearly the same.

What to expect for your lime painting estimate

Let’s talk about the process of getting your estimate done for your own home.  In a way, it’s similar to getting a bespoke suit or custom-tailored dress, where there are measurements, discussions about fabric choices, and individual fittings involved.

We loosely follow these steps with specialty finishes like limewash or plaster:
.
  1. We talk with you about the specific finish you’re looking for
  2. We get dimensions and clarify what the existing texture is on the walls now
  3. We send out your estimate, and
  4. If the numbers work for you, we order product and make you a custom sample to approve.

Deciding which finish you want

….

You may already know exactly the finish you’re looking for, right down to the product and color.  If so, great!  That makes it easy.
.
But maybe you saw some photos online that are the right “look” but don’t say what technique or product was used.  In that case, we’ll talk about the possibilities with you and see what you want.  Do you want the velvety brushstrokes of a limewash finish, or do you want the specific feel of lime plaster?
.
Even within a specific category like limewash or lime plaster, there are variations.  Plasters range from smooth and polished to coarser and more rustic.  And for lime painting, there’s the question of how much visual uniformity you want.  Do you want a single-color lime paint, where the brushstrokes alone are enough to give it a subtle visual texture and movement?  Most limewash paint projects you’ll see online are done with a single color, hand-brushed.

But maybe you want a little more visual movement in your finish.  That can be accomplished one of two ways:  applying a thinned-down lime paint over a different base color, or brushing two slightly-different lime paint colors into each other at the same time, wet-on-wet.
.
In this photo, we thinned down the slate green Portola Paints limewash paint just a tad, and applied it over a lighter base coat color, to make the brush strokes a little more obvious.

Or you can take two similar colors and brush them into each other, as in this photo from JH Wall Paints.

We’ll talk to you about exactly what you would like, whether it’s a single-color lime paint or possibly even a plaster.  If you are undecided between lime paint or plaster, we’ll send you numbers for both in your lime painting estimate, and then you can decide.  A plaster project will be more expensive than lime painting, because it takes a lot more labor to apply.  But both finishes are truly beautiful.
.
Send us any inspiration photos you may have, or links to specific photos you found online, to explore the possibilities!

Getting the specifics of your space

We’ll need the dimensions of your space, photos showing the space overall, and a close-up photo showing what the existing texture is.

Both limewash painting and lime plastering need to be applied over a perfectly smooth surface.  If your home is being built or remodeled, your general contractor can ensure the walls are smooth, or “wallpaper ready” (known as a “Level 5” finish in contractor lingo).  They can also apply a basic sheetrock primer.  Most likely this is already built into the cost of your new build or remodel, which will save you a bit in your budget.

But if your walls are already textured, we’ll need to refloat them to make them smooth, and then prime them before applying your finish.

This first round of information can actually be done by phone and email.  Just send us the dimensions of your space, several photos (from your phone is fine), and any inspiration pics or specific products you want to use.  For the photos, we need a couple of wide shots showing the whole room, and a close-up of the wall texture.  Or if our estimator comes to your home for an in-person consultation, they can take measurements and photos.

.

Reviewing your limewash painting estimate

Once we’ve talked about finish options and have the room specifics, we’ll send you your interior limewash painting estimate.  We’ll list whether we need to refloat the walls first, whether we’re estimating for a single-color application or two-colors blended in, and give you a separate option for lime plaster, if desired.  If the numbers work for your budget, then the fun begins!

.

Making your custom sample

If the lime painting estimate looks good, then we can talk about product, color, and getting you a custom sample for you to approve.

The custom sample is important, because unlike regular painting, lime painting is meant to show subtle variations in color or texture.  These are hand-done finishes with an artisanal feel.  There will always be variations in brush strokes in any hand-applied limewash, that’s part of the charm and authenticity of these finishes.  But a custom sample is the best way to make sure the finish on your walls will look reasonably close to the finish in that Instagram photo.

If you know the look you want but are unsure on color, the easiest way is to browse the online galleries of the various lime paint manufacturers.  Portola Paints, JH Wall Paints, and Color Atelier all have pages showing their various color options, plus gallery pages showing which colors were used in actual project photos.

.

Once we’ve gotten a deposit and made you a sample, you can see for yourself how the finish will look.  Usually the first sample is exactly what you were hoping for, but sometimes we end up making a second sample just to pin down the finish.  (There’s no charge for the first sample, but there usually is for a second sample, to cover our time and if we have to buy more product.).  That’s okay, that’s part of the creative process!
